Fragrant vetiver mats for cooling shade

On Monday we posted the first excerpt from David Crow’s presentation at the 2008 National Ayurvedic Medical Association annual conference. Below is another audio segment of his talk that we think you’ll find particularly inspiring. In this clip, David teaches us how one herb, vetiver (also known as khus), represents a model for how we can understand the function of plant-medicine from the context of both healing the body as well as healing the environment. We can see from this example how plant medicine provides the answer to significant benefits for healthcare, poverty alleviation, and sustainable ecology.

While listening to this section of the presentation, it is helpful to be familiar with some Ayurvedic terminology that David is referencing:

Dhatus: Tissue Layers (eg. plasma, blood, muscles, fat, bone, nerves, reproductive fluids) In this context he is relating the tissue layers of the human body to the ’tissue layers’ of the earth.

Doshas: The five elements expressed as humors or psycho-physiological energies which influence the equilibrium and health of body and mind.

Truly inspiring words. And simply put! What a beautiful medicine plant. Here in the Southern Appalachian Mountains we have a plant that shares vetiver’s ecological effect of stabilizing erosion, but the medicine it provides humans is more of a strong warning that a grounding essence; I’m talking about Poison Ivy! Bless all the medicine plants for their many types of healing they provide, both gentle and strong.
