Introduction
The Learning Garden is a 60,000-square-foot garden located at Venice High School in Venice, California, in the Los Angeles Unified School District. It was launched in March of 2001, and has since become one of the countrys largest and most successful school gardens. It contains plots for the high schools horticultural program, a peoples pharmacy of medicinal plants, a California native plant and cactus garden, a pond with water-loving medicinal plants, a greenhouse and shade house for propagation, a large stone patio for community gatherings and outdoor classes, a sunken kiva classroom surrounded by raised beds of Chinese medicinal plants, a rose garden, a large composting system, and a permaculture-style food forest. The entire garden is organically cultivated.
