Morning (10am - 1pm):
The Medicinal and Sacred Uses of Essential Oils

This workshop offers a practical introduction to the vast world of essential oils. Topics covered will include: how essential oils work-their absorption and effects on the glandular, respiratory, nervous and circulatory systems; the seven best ways of using essential oils effectively (inhalations, baths, compresses, facial steam, massage, palm inhalation, diffusers); what you need to know to avoid adulterated/contaminated oils and use oils safely; how to bring essential oils and resins into your spiritual life-to calm the mind, sharpen concentration, inspire metta (loving kindness), increase awareness of prana, and get into deeply relaxed states of consciousness.

Afternoon (2:30 - 5:30):
Ayurvedic Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy as it is understood and practiced in the US is an unknown concept in Ayurvedic medicine, yet Ayurvedic therapies and preparations are rich in the use of aromatic plants. This class will examine the meaning of the term "Ayurvedic Aromatherapy" from two perspectives. The first is the wide range of aromatic herbs and spices that are used in the vast pharmacopeia of Ayurveda, including abhyanga (medicated oils for external applications), svedana (aromatic herbs for steam therapies), nasya (medications for nasal injection), shirodhara (scented oils for bathing the head), arka (aromatic waters from distillation), attars (traditional botanical perfumes for marma therapy), and so on. The second will be how essential oils used in modern western aromatherapy can be applied according to the principles of Ayurveda, including using according to the doshas (biological humors), dhatus (tissue levels), gunas (qualities), and bhutas (elements).
