Angelica has been used since the time of Paracelsus in the Middle Ages as a natural restorative, gently stimulating and simultaneously sedating, which conduces to overall wellbeing. Often placed by early herbalists at the forefront of medicinal plants, it is revitalizing and grounding, warming and comforting. Its relaxant effect renders angelica as potent as ginger in supporting digestive health.
Angelica supports the circulatory system and detoxification processes.
The characteristic spicy, musky odor of Angelica serves double duty as a key ingredient in perfume blending. It is employed for its supporting effect on respiratory function and its ability to enhance feelings of well being via its calming and grounding effects. Angelica can assist in the revitalization of dull, congested skin and supports healthy microbial balance.
Angelica essential oil can be applied topically (see photosensitivity information below), as a compress, in the bath, through direct inhalation, or diffuser.
Add one or two drops of angelica oil to a massage oil, or in the bath, to support lymphatic drainage, to sooth and support digestive function or as part of an overall detoxification program.
For women, apply one to two drops diluted in a carrier oil as a compress over abdomen to support a balanced monthly cycle.
Inhale angelica oil in vapor therapy to help support lung health.
Diffuse angelica oil to support the respiratory system, digestive and nervous system.
Angelica oil was known as "holy spirit root" in the Middle Ages due to its almost miraculous healing powers. When the Black Plague swept Europe, the herb was considered an antidote for it, and its seeds and roots were burned to purify the air. "Angelica Water" was also employed when the plague swept London in 1665.
Angelica is used in the preparation of Vermouth and Chartreuse.
