Tsuga canadensis

The sturdy and venerable tsuga tree, also known as Eastern Hemlock, grows to maturity only after 250-300 years, and can live at least 800 years. A living medicine cabinet for Native American tribes who recognized its astringent and anti-microbial powers, the tree yields an essential oil which is steam distilled from needles and branches, and blends fragrance notes of herbaceous pine and citrus with the trademark balsamic aroma of other conifer oils.

Health Benefits:

Eastern hemlock (not to be confused with black spruce) enjoys the myriad benefits of its sister conifer oils, supporting circulatory, respiratory and muscular systems, as well as exerting a calming effect on the mind. Hemlock has a strong antispasmodic effect and is therefore indicated for use in attending to respiratory complaints such as tightness in the lungs and chest, along with asthma, bronchitis, and spastic cough. It is also an expectorant and can be used to break down and clear excess mucous in the respiratory tract. Vapor therapy or diffusion is a good method for these conditions. The cooling, stimulating effect of Eastern hemlock renders it useful in massage for muscular aches or spasms, joint pain, and in cases of poor circulation.

A tonifying oil, Hemlock is considered to be uplifting and grounding, and is indicated for relief of stress and anxiety, and is well suited to direct palm inhalation or diffusion in these instances.

How to Use:

How To Use Eastern Hemlock Oil:

Eastern hemlock oil can be applied topically (diluted), as a compress, in the bath, through direct inhalation, or diffuser.

Add several drops to steaming water (vapor therapy) to loosen mucous and to soothe spastic cough.

Inhale Eastern hemlock oil (direct-palm inhalation) to quell anxiety and agitation.

Add 6 drops to 1 oz. lotion or massage oil and massage into affected areas to relieve joint or muscle pain and increase circulation.

Diffuse Eastern hemlock for a calming, grounding effect.

More Information:

More about Eastern Hemlock Essential Oil:

Eastern hemlock, also known as Canada hemlock, hemlock spruce, and tsuga, is a slow growing and long lived tree which, unlike many other trees, grows well in shade. It may take 250 to 300 years to reach maturity and may live almost 1,000 years. Native Americans employed it as a poultice and in a variety of therapeutic uses. The bark of the hemlock tree was once the source of tannin for the leather industry, though now it is used principally in the pulp and paper industry. Smaller and faster growing varieties of hemlock are popular in ornamental planting.
