Citrus aurantifolia

Fresh, tangy and fragrantly emphatic, this lime essential oil shares much of its therapeutic profile with its citrus cousin, the lemon, and has many of the same astringent, toning and mood elevating properties. Distilled from South African limes, this essential oil has a particularly bright, zesty scent.

Bottle Size: 1/2 oz (15 ml)

Health Benefits:

Like its other citrus cousins, lime essential oil is an ideal purifying and detoxifying agent. Topically applied, lime’s astringent and toning properties are known to help clear oily or acne-prone skin, while improving circulation, easing aches and pains, and smoothing adipose tissue. Immune supporting, lime oil can be useful in cooling fevers while lessening coughs, bronchitis and sinusitis in the respiratory tract.

Lime’s refreshing yet not-too-sweet properties, when diffused, can assist with countering mental fatigue, apathy, anxiety, and depression.

How to Use:

How To Use Lime Oil:

Lime essential oil can be applied topically, as a compress, in the bath, through direct inhalation, or diffuser.

Inhale (direct palm inhalation) lime oil to uplift a tired mind and ease digestive upset.

In vapor therapy, inhale lime and grapefruit oils to sooth sore throat and ease sinus congestion.

Two drops lime in an aromatic bath can soothe digestive complaints and muscular aches and pains.

Diffuse lime with grapefruit and lavender to soothe the nervous system, boost mental clarity, and help reduce stress and tension.

Lime Oil Recipes:

Mental clarity blend: 4 drops lime, 2 drops tulsi, 2 drops peppermint in diffuser, or place a few drops on tissue and inhale

Ancestral essence blend: 8 drops lime, 8 drops frankincense, 2 drops each opoponax, patchoulisandalwood in 15 ml jojoba oil

More Information:

Originally from Asia, the lime tree was introduce in Europe by the Moors, and is now cultivated in Italy, Africa, the West Indies, and the Americas. British ships transporting limes were called 'lime juicers' and crews depended on the lime’s high vitamin C content to prevent scurvy.

Lime is used to flavor ginger ale and cola drinks, and also used in the perfume industry, particular in men’s formulations.

Some citrus oils are steam distilled, but most are expressed, or expeller pressed, by squeezing the fatty oil from the rind of the fruit. The expression method does not produce what are technically considered “essential” oils, though this is the best method of extraction in most cases.

Safety Guidelines:

Safety Considerations for Lime Essential Oil:

Like other citrus oils, lime oil is considered non-toxic and non-irritant but is also considered to be photo-sensitizing, therefore avoid UV exposure for 24 hours after topical application. Do not take lime essential oil internally.
