Ancient Hebrew medicine was practiced in the land of Israel until at least the second century B.C., as attested by contemporary historians who described the export of ointments from the Judean desert region. Indigenous herbs included Origanum dayi (desert marjoram) and another dozen or so plants which are particular to the area.

The Judean desert is a narrow strip, about 30 km wide which is on the border of two distinct ecosystems, the lowest being the warm, dry Dead Sea (400 m. below sea level) region; the highest being the Judean Hills, 1000 m. above sea level with a rainy, Mediterranean climate. Desert marjoram grows slowly, and flowers sparingly the first year.
