Mentha spicata

Instantly recognizable, the mood-elevating aroma of spearmint oil produces calmative effects on the nervous system and digestion. The softer, warmer properties of spearmint essential oil make it an excellent substitute when peppermint oil is too strong or stimulating. This organically cultivated spearmint oil from the Negev Desert of Israel offers the characteristic aromatic notes of spearmint but in a more complex, soft, and herbaceous profile than other spearmint oils.

Bottle Size: 1/2 oz (15 ml)

Health Benefits:

Like peppermint oil, spearmint essential oil excels in treating the gamut of digestive ailments, including nausea, intestinal cramps, indigestion, colic, constipation, and flatulence both through topical use as well as diffusion. A strong anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antispasmodic, topically applied spearmint essential oil is well-suited to increase circulation, assisting in calming muscle spasms and tension. Those same soothing qualities make spearmint oil valuable for congested and itching skin. Vapor therapy using spearmint oil can alleviate flu and respiratory symptoms including fever, cough, and sinus congestion.

Unlike peppermint oil, spearmint essential oil is calming, warming and gently uplifting, rather than strongly cooling and stimulating. These more nuanced properties make it useful in treating mental fatigue, headaches, and depression when applied to soles of feet, diffused, or used in direct palm inhalation.

How to Use:

How To Use Spearmint Oil:

Spearmint oil can be applied topically in very low dilution only. It can also be used as a compress, in the bath, through direct inhalation, or diffuser.

Blend several drops spearmint essential oil with a massage oil or cream to relieve itching and encourage relaxation.

Add two drops spearmint oil to bath water to relieve fatigue and address respiratory issues such as asthma and bronchitis.

For a stimulating and refreshing facial steam, use several drops in vapor therapy to cleanse and refine pores.

Diffuse spearmint oil to mitigate headaches, migraines, and release stagnant emotional blocks

Spearmint Oil Recipes:

Appetite stimulant: 3 drops spearmint, 3 drops lime, 2 drops ginger inhaled directly from the bottle (keep away from eyes)

Children's cold and flu blend: 1 drop spearmint, 2 drops blue chamomile, 2 drops lavender in 1/2 oz. carrier oil, rubbed over tummy before bedtime (to diffuse, omit carrier oil)

More Information:

Ancient Greeks scented their bath water with spearmint oil, which had a reputation for curing sexually transmitted infections. During the Middle Ages spearmint leaves were scattered on the floors of public spaces to get rid of rodents and encourage good health. The herb was also used to heal sore gums and to whiten teeth.

The spearmint plant is native to Europe, but is now cultivated across the United States and Asia. The state of Washington is currently one of the world's largest producers of spearmint oil. Its most common use is as a flavoring additive to toothpaste, chewing gums and candy.

Safety Guidelines:

Safety Considerations for Spearmint Essential Oil:

It is a mucous membrane irritant and possible skin irritant, however it is gentler than peppermint oil and can be used on children over 6 in low dilution. Do not use during pregnancy.
