From the Hua Lu Intro, by David Crow:
Hua mean “flower,” and lu means “dew.” I came across this term in Joseph Needham’s “Science and Civilization in China” while researching the development of essential oil distillation in ancient China. The term was used in a text written by Chang Shi Nan in 1233, describing how drops of aromatic water collected during the creation of an exquisite perfume, made by distilling neroli flowers (Citrus aurantium, chih shih) together with chen xiang (agarwood, Aquillaria agalocha).
Essential oils can be looked at through many lenses. They can be described in terms of chemistry, physiology, microbiology, clinical therapeutics, agriculture, ecophysiology, history, commerce, etc. They can be looked at through the lens of spiritual applications, and shamanism. They can be described according to modern physiology, and according to the language of TCM.
There will be two basic approaches used in this course. The first will be examining the role of aromatic plants and their preparations in TCM; the second is that we will describe the oils, their properties and their therapeutic uses according to TCM principles and terminology. In this way, we will see how traditional doctors utilized the healing powers of aromatic plants, and will thereby gain insights into the modern uses of their essential oils; alternately, we will use the traditional concepts of TCM to explain the more modern development of essential oils being utilized for their own benefits.
