  • More about Essential Oil of Bergamot:

The bergamot citrus tree is native to South East Asia, but was introduced to Europe, and particularly Italy and is also found in the Ivory Coast, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. This light greenish-yellow bergamot fruit has a fresh, sweet-tart, orange-fruit scent, with a slightly spicy balsamic undertone. Bergamot essential oil is named after the Italian city of Bergamo in Lombardy, where the oil was first distilled and sold. It is still grown mostly in Italy in a town called Calabria. It is not to be confused with bee balm which also goes by the name bergamot.

Bergamot oil is one of the most widely used essential oils in the perfumery and toiletry industry and forms, together with neroli and lavender, the main ingredient for the classical 4711 Eau-de-cologne fragrance. It is used to flavor Earl Grey tea. Most commerical oil of bergamot has had the bergapten removed to lessen the effect of the sensitivity to sun, but also lessening the medicinal properties.

Safety Considerations for Bergamot Essential Oil:

Do not take bergamot oil internally. Do not apply directly to the eyes or mucous membranes.
    Potential for Skin Irritation: High

Bergamot essential oil is potentially phototoxic—it can irritate or burn the skin if not used with extreme caution. If used on the skin at all, bergamot oil should always be diluted, and only used on parts of the body that are not going to be exposed to sunlight or UV light from any source within 24 hours. Test diluted bergamot oil on a small area of the skin that will not be exposed to UV light within 24 hours. If any irritation occurs, avoid using bergamot oil on your skin.
