  • More About Gully Gum Eucalyptus Essential Oil:

"Eucalyptus" comes from the Greek roots eu and calyptos, meaning "well" and "covered," in reference to the operculum of the flower bud. This organ protects the reproductive structures during their development and sheds under pressure from the emerging stamens during flowering. Eucalyptus has been used medicinally by aboriginal people throughout Australia over the centuries and was introduced in oil form to Europe in the 19th century.

Typically found growing in gullies, this variety of eucalyptus also has a sticky reddish "gum" that exudes from the bark of the tree, hence the full name "gully gum." A variety of dyes are produced from different parts of the plant, and eucalyptus oil is used in numerous products from cough drops, to mouthwash and inhalants. Africans use finely powdered bark as an insect repelling dust while people from around the world use it for anything from maintaining healthy gums to relieving rhumatism. Eucalyptus oil is associated with the alleviation of grief and sorrow, as well as the promotion of an expansive, open-minded perspective.

Eucalyptus Oil in the Global Garden: Ecological, Cultural and Economic Benefits:

Floracopeia is proud to offer this Organic eucalyptus essential oil from South Africa. At present there are about thirty-three distilleries in the southern Africa region distilling a variety of cultivated and wild harvested aromatic plants. Floracopeia is currently working with one of the primary organizers and distributors for those distilleries, to offer common and well-established aromatic products (such as eucalyptus) as well as to develop new ones.

Most of the cultivated essential oils are either certified organic through international certifying agencies such as Eco-Cert, or non-certified organic, meaning that they are organically produced but have yet to receive full documentation; the remainder of the oils are ethically wild-crafted from healthy ecosystems. All these essential oil projects are linked directly to poverty alleviation programs established for the dual purpose of caretaking local environments while producing sustainable economic benefits.
