Bear Fruit: Salmonberry Flower Essence
About Bear Fruit: Salmonberry Flower Essence
Salmonberry, a member of the Roseacea family, is one of the most abundant and cherished temperate coastal rainforest plants of the Pacific Northwest, extending from west central Alaska to California. This quick growing bramble shrub forms large thickets in moist forests and along stream beds, producing large orangish-red edible berries from its golden prickly stems. The Salmonberry, related to and resembling blackberry and raspberry, was the inspiration behind an island's name in the Alaskan Kodiak archipelago, Raspberry Island. In the springtime, the nodding, cupped magenta flowers signal the return of several hummingbird species.
Highly esteemed as an important botanical resource for many First Nations indigenous cultures, Salmonberry was an important food source as the entire plant is edible. It supplies sweet tender spring shoots eaten raw, often with salmon, and berries consumed fresh, tending to be too large and juicy for drying. It was common for some tribal families to own patches of Salmonberry, reserving the initial bountiful harvest this plant so generously offers. Salmonberry was used medicinally to stimulate the appetite, relieve stomach upset, regulate the menstrual cycle, ease labor pains, and build the blood in cases of anemia.
Salmonberry, a plant that is deeply rooted to the earth, helps prevent erosion by holding the soil intact at water's edge or on steep slopes. It quickly returns after an area has been disturbed due to logging, mining, etc.
Salmonberry flower essence energetically concentrates this plant's bountiful nature, bringing us into greater awareness and alignment with our innate abundance, fruitfulness, and creative power. It could be said that this life-giving plant, when used as a flower essence, contains teaching related to the Mother feminine archetype. It can be used when we feel a lack of contentment or have feelings of inadequacy surfacing within ourselves. Salmonberry energetically strengthens the spine through the various acupuncture meridians, enabling us to firmly stand on our own in a balanced way. Salmonberry helps us realize our creative potential and bring it into manifestation.

What are Flower Essences?
Flower essences are a bioenergetic imprint of a flower that has been transferred and stabilized in water. Flower essences work on the non-material parts of ourselves and are used for emotional, mental and spiritual concerns. Flower essences are a primary treatment for what Traditional Chinese Medicine calls Shen or Spirit. TCM views Shen or Spirit as containing aspects of emotional and mental health. Each flower is profoundly intelligent and holds specific transformational information that can help us realize our true nature and help us shift out of self-limiting, self-destructive patterns and behaviors. Since flower essences are energetic in nature, their benefits are not due to a bio-chemical interaction with the body, but instead they work on the various energy pathways and fields such as the acupuncture meridians to create health and well-being in the body, mind and spirit.
