Ceremony & Meditation for Fall Wellness

As you think of fall, are there certain scents that come to mind?

Autumn is often associated with warm, spicy scents, like cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and ginger, and earthy scents. They conjure up images of falling leaves and woods, like cedarwood, frankincense, myrrh, and sandalwood.

Let’s take a look at a few of our favorite fall scents that also are sacred botanicals — powerful tools to incorporate into your wellness routines and enhance spiritual meditation and emotional balance.

Frankincense Essential Oil, Serrata has a clean, citrusy fragrance, unlike anything else. It’s highly therapeutic and can be used to protect your home, clarify the air, and disinfect surfaces and the atmosphere. Antimicrobial and meditative, it’s a powerful tool for fall wellness.

With its soft, sweetly resinous fragrance, the clean, fresh aroma of Silver Fir Essential Oil is calming and encourages restful sleep — while promoting mental clarity and a clear, effective mind.

Omumbiri Essential Oil is known as Namibian Myrrh. It is a clarifying and uplifting botanical with an earthy, spicy, warm fragrance. One of the oldest ethnobotanicals, it’s been used in ceremonies and rituals throughout history. It’s highly therapeutic and is used to reduce inflammation and pain, as well as prevent infection. It’s also said to act as protection against negativity.

Soft, sweet, and uplifting, Palo Santo Essential Oil is grounding and purifying. This sacred oil is used for creativity, meditation, and concentration, as well as to lift the mood and restore emotional balance. It’s a heavenly, spiritual addition to your autumn season ceremonies.

The shift in seasons is a perfect time to practice ceremony, set intentions for the future, and leave the past behind.

Aromatherapy is a powerful tool for connecting intention with action.

As the crisp fall air gets lighter and cooler and the sky feels more spacious, simple palm inhalation or diffusing the oil (or a blend of oils) can help you shift into a clearer, purified mindset. It’s perfect for releasing and cleansing ceremonies that make space for the new...

Below are some ideas for clearing space for the new season — and putting the past behind you with aromatherapeutic ceremonies or rituals.

Fall Ceremonies for Wellness

Fall is a great time to look inward and identify your innermost intentions. Consider these autumn ceremonies to be private, contemplative, and adaptable to your personal needs and feelings.

woman outside in fall

This very simple walking ceremony should be done outdoors, to ground in nature.

To begin, ask yourself: “What do I want to move towards?”

You can identify a goal, intention, or envision your future.

Find a way to articulate your vision in a simple mantra. For instance “I am moving toward joy.” Or “I am moving toward prosperity.” Or “I am moving toward self-confidence and self-love.”

Dab Palo Santo Essential Oil on your palms. Cup your palms over your nose and mouth, then breathe in deeply from your nose, inhaling the woody, grounding scent. Then drop your hands on the exhale...

Continue this breathing practice as you slowly start walking forward. Begin reciting your mantra. “I am moving toward…”

Continue this walking meditation for as long as you like, and as often as you like. You may not do a palm inhalation with each breath. You may find you want to fall into rhythm, aligning steps, mantra, and breath, for deeper meditation. Adapt this meditation to whatever you need in the moment.

Palo Santo Oil is among the best oils to use via direct palm inhalation for its clearing and inspiring properties. It has settling, calming, and grounding qualities, making it a great ally for maintaining emotional equanimity. It’s also a superb oil for spiritual upliftment, grounding, and intention-setting.

This simple meditation can be used any time to enhance concentration, reduce agitation and irritability, and clear your mind.

Add several drops of Silver Fir Essential Oil into your diffuser.

Close your eyes and begin Ujjaya breathwork. (If you’re unfamiliar, Ujjaya breath constricts the throat. Think of fogging a mirror or a window in front of you, by dropping your jaw, pulling your tongue in, and pushing your breath from the back of your throat. It can be done subtly through your nose, as well, with the throat constricted in this way.)

Continue breathing in and out with Ujjaya breath, focusing on the refreshing scent of the Silver Fir, and clearing your mind.

Think of this quick meditation as an in-the-moment reset button — the calming breathwork and fragrant fir will combine together for a potent cleansing and clarifying experience.

Fall is a time to harvest what we’ve sown, and release what’s no longer serving us — much like plants and trees drop their leaves and turn their energy inside.

To release and let go, do the following ceremony outside with a small fire.

You’ll need several pieces of paper, a writing utensil, a small fire, and access to water for safety.

First, blend Frankincense Essential Oil, Serrata and a carrier oil (such as jojoba or argan oil), and anoint yourself with the oil by dabbing it on your temples and third eye in the center of your forehead.

Meditate for a few minutes to reflect upon what you are carrying that you no longer need or want. It may be negative emotions, habits, or memories.

After your meditation, take a moment to write out each item you’d like to release on its own piece of paper.

When you’ve listed them all, select one. Starting with the words “I release,” read each item on the paper aloud. Envision letting it go, whatever this look may like to you. Connect with the emotion of release, whether it’s joy, relief, sadness, or emptiness. When you can feel release, burn the paper — and envision it being carried away on the rising smoke.

After all your papers are burned, take a moment to sit with the space you’ve created for yourself. Identify the emotions of release, and eventually, what you’d like to bring into the new, wide open, fresh, clean space.

Even if the things you’re releasing are seemingly out of control, verbalizing and creating ceremony around intentions puts that positivity and energy out into the universe.

This ceremony is for clearing your space and improving energy.

MiOmumbiri Essential Oil, Frankincense Essential Oil, Serrata into distilled water in a spray bottle.

Open the windows, shake the bottle, and spritz the space you’d like to clear. Using a feather, or another device to usher the stagnant air out of the windows, say goodbye to the things that are no longer welcome in your space...

For example, “Goodbye anxiety. Procrastination, you are no longer welcome here.”

Usher out the negativity by wafting the air towards the windows.

This mixture not only imparts a spiritual reconnection and temple-like scent into the space, it helps purify the air, fighting off bacteria and viruses.

Because a Frankincense and Myrrh mixtureis such a powerful protector, you can move into positive affirmations of protection for the space once you’ve cleared it of any negativity.
