Summer is busy.
We’re regularly outside, enjoying the sun, good weather, beach, waves, and pool. Although we wait all year for good weather, it comes with elements that can damage our hair and skin; UV rays, salt, pool chemicals, and even wind can cause unwanted damage.
Luckily, there are ways you can protect and repair your skin and hair naturally while still enjoying summer living.
Protecting and Repairing Your Skin
Let’s be honest… Summer is tough on our skin!
It’s hot, we sweat, we itch, we jump in the pool, we dehydrate, we dry in the sun after enjoying the saltwater… and we forget to take a little time to check in with our skin and make sure it has everything it needs to protect and repair itself, leaving it irritated, clogged, and dehydrated.
Skin Protection Before Sun Exposure
Healthy skin is better suited to avoid damage from outdoor summer elements. That’s why we recommend moisturizing and balancing your skin, even in the summer.
Moisturizing for PreSun Exposure
We love Jojoba Carrier Oil for skin moisture in the summer. Its profile matches our skin’s natural sebum, making it a quick-absorbing moisturizer. It also is a natural sun protection booster that you can pair with your daily natural sunscreen.
To Use: Jojoba Oil can be used as a head-to-toe moisturizer (even in your hair!). For a personal scented experience, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, like rosemary or lavender. Just stay clear of citrus-based oils like lemon, lime, grapefruit, and tangerine, as they should not be used before going out in the sun.
UV Ray Protection
The most important thing you can do for your skin during the summer (and any time you are outside!) is to apply sunscreen, consistently and frequently. Sun ages your skin, causes sun spots, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles. Sunscreen can help prevent some of this damage.
Make sure to look for natural-based sunscreens with an SPF of 30 or higher that are reef safe and zinc based to protect your skin and the environment. The higher the SPF, the better!
The other thing to consider, when possible, is a hat and long sleeves. It’s hard in the summer, but young, youthful skin is more ‘in style’ than tanned skin, so, grab that cover-up and find a nice beach hat!
Skin Repair After Sun Exposure
Taking care of your skin after you’ve been outside all day is just as important to maintain and encourage good hair and skin health.
Sweat, sunscreen, environmental pollutions, salt, and pool chemicals can damage the skin after prolonged exposure. It’s important to rinse them off and cleanse the skin with a natural, organic, balancing cleanser.
Cleansing Your Skin after Outdoor Summer Fun
Golden Beauty Body Wash is a decadent body cleanser that can remove damaging elements gently and replenish the body’s natural moisture balance.
Immortelle Cleansing Dew is an organically aromatic facial cleanser that won’t disturb your skin’s protective barrier and will cleanse away dirt and debris gently and deeply while restoring your yin and yang.
Moisturizing Your Skin
After cleansing, moisturize your skin to repair and nourish. Hydrated skin is strong and healthy, and less prone to damage.
Even sweating in the summer can remove oils from your skin. Jojoba Carrier Oil mimics our skin’s natural moisturizing abilities, so can be used to regenerate moisture when we’ve stripped it away with harsh pool chemicals or heavy sweating.
Use Skin Charm Mist any time you need facial hydration. Over time you will experience lifted skin, tightening, and plumping. It’s an aromatic boost to your skin, any time, anywhere.
Preventing Dark Spots
Use Sandalwood Hydrosol to spritz your face to avoid the formation of dark spots. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause melanin production, which leads to dark spots on the skin. Sandalwood is effective at lightening skin and creating a more even tone.
Rosehip Seed Oil can reverse sun damage and prevent darkening of the skin as well. It can smooth out wrinkles, and soothe dry, irritated, or reddened skin. Try it for an all-over after-sun moisturizer!
Protecting and Repairing Your Hair in the Summer
Our hair is just as susceptible to summer damage as our skin. Protecting it doesn’t have to be difficult, and can help keep it healthy, hydrated, and strong all year round.
Hair Protection Before Sun Exposure
Taking a few minutes to prepare before enjoying the summer weather can help protect your hair from damaging environmental elements that may leave it dry, lifeless, broken, and dull.
Preventing UV Damage to Hair:
Did you know that UV rays can damage your hair?
It’s true! Not only are they dangerous to unprotected skin, but they can also penetrate hair follicles, making your strands weak, brittle, dry, and susceptible to breakage.
Argan Oil offers some UV protection and can strengthen hair shafts. This nourishing oil is lightweight and has small molecules that can easily be absorbed by hair, making it an ideal conditioning component in your summer haircare routine.
To Use: Add a little Argan oil to your palms, and rub it onto your fingertips. Gently run your fingers through your hair, paying special attention to the ends. Distribute through your hair and style as usual. It’s a great heat protectant, nourisher, and moisturizer, as well as a flyaway soother.
Also, consider wearing a hat when possible. A large sun hat can reduce UV ray damage to your hair. And, if you have scalp showing (for instance, the part between braids) it’s a good idea to apply sunscreen.
Preventing Dry and Brittle Hair
Summer heat, UV rays, salt water, and pool chemicals all dry your hair out. For a take-with-you moisturizer, try this Sandalwood Hydrosol.
To Use: This chemical-free hair mist should be used on the ends of hair to moisturize and repair before exposing your hair to the sun and wind, and even throughout the day. Hydrating and returning shine to your hair is as simple as a few spritzes!
Preventing Wind Damage to Hair
Wind can cause tangles, which can break your hair, especially if it is already dry or brittle.
Loose hair is more apt to get tangled when you’re boating, swimming, or enjoying a windy day at the beach. Pull your hair back in a braid or ponytail, collecting your hair to reduce movement and tangling. Not only will your hair break less, you’ll contribute fewer strands to the water!
Hair Repair After Sun Exposure
After enjoying the elements all day, be sure to give your hair the right attention to keep it strong and healthy.
Rinse Your Hair
If you’ve been in the water, at the beach, or in a pool, it’s important to rinse your hair from the chemicals, salt, or environmental pollutants you may have been exposed to. Even the sunscreen on your scalp can clog your pores, and should be rinsed out as soon as it’s no longer needed.
Condition Your Hair
Just like your skin, hair that is moisturized is more likely to fight off summer damage and repair itself quickly.
Try this hydrating mask for protection and repair:
- 1 ounce of Jojoba Carrier Oil
- 10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
- 10 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil
To Use: Mix together and gently comb it through your hair with your fingers. If your hair is not tangled, you can use a wide-toothed comb to distribute it more evenly. Let it rest for 20-30 minutes, and wash out with a natural, organic shampoo. Use a shower cap over your hair to prevent any drips.
