Interesting Rose Geranium Essential Oil Information

There are about 700 different varieties of geranium, yet only 10 of these supply essential oil in viable quantities. The common and recognizable garden variety does not produce sufficient oil for extraction. Rose geranium originated in Africa, where it has a long history of use in treating burns and other skin disorders. Introduced to European countries Italy, Spain, and France in the 17th century, geranium was commonly planted inside homes to keep evil spirits at bay. Currently geranium is used as flavoring in the food and beverage industries, as well as in perfumes and other cosmetics.

A rose by any other name...

Would not smell as sweet as this oil! My mother always had geraniums of various types growing around and inside the house, so when purchasing this oil I expected a similar but slightly rosier aroma of a typical houseplant. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that my expectation was setting the bar much, much lower than the actual experience. It's amazing how deliciously potent and uplifting this oil can be. I would suggest mixing it with something a bit more grounding like angelica or moena to round out the floral top notes. On its own it can be a bit too sweet for my liking, but with just a little bit of tweaking it provides a heavenly scent.

Subtle, sweet and feminine
